5 REASONS NOT TO LEAN ON YOUR OWN
UNDERSTANDING.
( Proverbs 3:5) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not
unto thine own understanding.
* INTRODUCTION:
*Simply means. When it comes to making choices in life you should trust
God’s way of thinking and choosing over your own decision-making ability. To
give this conversation full context we need to understand the why behind it.
Why does it make sense to trust God? Why should we not lean on our own
understanding?
Why Does the Bible Tell Us to Not Lean on Our Own Understanding?
(Proverbs 3:5) Trust in the LORD with all thine
heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
* Speaks to the dilemma that everyone who chooses to follow God faces,
how to trust and how to choose. We all have decisions to make, and yet this
Proverb is clearly stating that you should not trust your own thinking or
reasoning. The way my mind works, it causes me to ask why should we lean not on
our own understanding? What is it about our mind or heart that cannot be
trusted? Let’s pull back the layers of this verse, and our hearts, to fully
understand this better.
* There is human wisdom and there is God's wisdom. These two things are
vastly different. The Bible acknowledges the limitations of human understanding
and the finite nature of human knowledge in several verses and passages. In Isaiah 55:8-9 we are told the vast difference between God's wisdom and human wisdom:
"For my thoughts are not your
thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. As the heavens are
higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts
than your thoughts."
* Here are 5 reasons to show why we should not lean on our own
understanding.
1. GOD'S WAYS ARE ALWAYS PERFECT. OUR WAYS ARE NOT &
FLAWED.
* Flawed: Defect
God’s ways – “As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is
flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him”
(Psalm 18:30). As for God, his way is perfect:
the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.
Man’s ways –
( Proverbs 14:12 ) There is a way which seemeth right
unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
2. GOD'S HEART IS PURE AND RIGHTEOUS. OUR HEART CAN BE
DECEPTIVE.
* DECEPTIVE- Tending to be deceived.
God’s heart – ( Psalms 145:17 ) The LORD is righteous in all his ways, and holy in
all his works.
Man’s heart – “The heart
is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
3. GOD'S WAYS DO NOT CHANGE. OUR HEARTS AND MIND CHANGE
ALWAYS.
( Numbers 23:19 ) God is not a man, that he should
lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he
not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?
4. GOD SEES FROM AN ETERNAL PERSPECTIVE. WE SEE FROM DAY
TO DAY.
God’s vision – (Psalms 90:2) Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever
thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to
everlasting, thou art God.
( Psalms 139:16 ) Thou knowest my downsitting and
mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
( Psalms 139:16 ) Thine eyes did see my substance,
yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in
continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
Man’s vision – “For now
we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I
know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known” (1 Corinthians
13:12).
5. GOD'S PLAN FOR YOU ARE PERFECT. OUR PLAN ARE ALWAYS
EARTHLY AND LEADS US TO DISCOURAGEMENT.
( Psalms 19:7 ) The law of the LORD is perfect,
converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
(Proverbs 16:1) The preparations of the heart in
man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.
( Proverbs 16:9) A man's heart deviseth his way:
but the LORD directeth his steps.
( James 4:13-15 ) [13]Go to now, ye that say, To day
or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy
and sell, and get gain:
[14]Whereas ye know not what shall
be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth
for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
[15]For that ye ought to say, If
the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.
* God bless you all always *
