THE
DESIRES OF A SPIRITUAL MAN ARE ALWAYS GOOD IN THE SIGHT OF GOD
PROVERBS 1:1–7 "1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David,
king of Israel; 2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of
understanding; 3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment,
and equity; 4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and
discretion. 5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of
understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: 6 To understand a proverb, and
the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings. 7 The fear
of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and
instruction."
Introduction
a. God's plan and desire for all
believers in Christ is to be spiritual, and the Word of God is the source of
being a spiritual Christian in the sight of God.
MATTHEW 4:4 — "But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by
bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God."
JOSHUA 1:8 — "This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou
shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according
to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous,
and then thou shalt have good success."
b. Spiritual Christians are the most
mature, faithful, and effective soul-winners inside the local church.
ACTS 6:5–6 — "5 And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose
Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Ghost, and Philip, and Prochorus,
and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolas a proselyte of Antioch: 6
Whom they set before the apostles: and when they had prayed, they laid their
hands on them."
c. Spiritual Christians are always a
blessing to the church and a great help to God's servant for the growth of the
church.
ACTS 6:7 — "And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples
multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were
obedient to the faith."
I. ALWAYS DESIRE TO BE A KNOWING MAN
AS CHILDREN OF GOD.
PROVERBS 1:2 — "To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of
understanding;"
a. A spiritual Christian will always
desire to know more of the wisdom of God.
PROVERBS 4:5–7 — "5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline
from the words of my mouth. 6 Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee:
love her, and she shall keep thee. 7 Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore
get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding."
b. Lack of wisdom destroys the lives of
God's people.
HOSEA 4:6 — "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast
rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to
me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy
children."
c. There are many benefits and
blessings in knowing the wisdom of God.
PSALMS 19:7–11 — "7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the
testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the
Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure,
enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the
judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired
are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the
honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them
there is great reward."

II. ALWAYS DESIRE TO LEARN MORE
SPIRITUAL THINGS FROM GOD.
PROVERBS 1:3 — "To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and
equity;"
a. Christians who acquire the
instruction of God are those who continue in the way of the Lord.
2 TIMOTHY 3:14 — "But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast
been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;"
b. This is the way to stay safe from
the false teachings of false teachers.
2 CORINTHIANS 10:13–15 — "15 Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other
men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be
enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly,"
c. Learning Christians are good and
effective partners with God in His ministry.
2 TIMOTHY 2:15 — "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not
to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."
III. ALWAYS DESIRE TO BE A GROWING
MAN IN THE CHRISTIAN LIFE.
PROVERBS 1:4–5 — "4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and
discretion. 5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of
understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:"
a. God's plan for Christians is to grow
continually in grace.
2 PETER 3:18 — "But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour
Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen."
b. A growing Christian is also a
glowing Christian inside the local church.
MATTHEW 5:16 — "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good
works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
c. God has provided the church with
capable and spiritual men to guide new believers and weaker Christians so they
may grow spiritually.
EPHESIANS 4:16 — "From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by
that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the
measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself
in love."
IV. ALWAYS DESIRE TO BE AN
UNDERSTANDING MAN BEFORE GOD AND MAN.
PROVERBS 1:6 — "To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the
wise, and their dark sayings."
a. Understanding Christians are the
strongest Christians inside the local church.
2 TIMOTHY 2:1 — "Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ
Jesus."
b. They are faithful men qualified to
be soul-winners for the Lord Jesus Christ.
2 TIMOTHY 2:2 — "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the
same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also."
c. They are committed soldiers of the
Lord Jesus Christ.
2 TIMOTHY 2:3–4 — "3 Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus
Christ. 4 No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life;
that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier."
V. ALWAYS DESIRE TO BE A GOD-FEARING
MAN BEFORE GOD.
PROVERBS 1:7 — "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools
despise wisdom and instruction."
a. God-fearing Christians are blessed
Christians in His sight.
PSALMS 128:1 — "Blessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his
ways."
b. God-fearing Christians are blessed
with a fruitful and happy family.
PSALMS 128:2–3 — "2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou
be, and it shall be well with thee. 3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by
the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy
table."
c. God-fearing Christians are very
close to the heart of God.
PSALMS 128:4–6 — "4 Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord.
5 The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of
Jerusalem all the days of thy life. 6 Yea, thou shalt see thy children's
children, and peace upon Israel."
VI. ALWAYS DESIRE TO BE A FRUITFUL
MAN BEFORE GOD.
PSALMS 92:12–14 — "12 The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow
like a cedar in Lebanon. 13 Those that be planted in the house of the Lord
shall flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They shall still bring forth fruit
in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;"
a. God is glorified through the
fruitful life of a Christian.
JOHN 15:8 — "Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye
be my disciples."
JOHN 15:16 — "Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you,
that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain:
that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it
you."
