[OO] [PREACHING LESSON 12:] IS THORN IN THE FLESH A CURSE OR A BLESSING TO CHRISTIANS?

IS THORN IN THE FLESH A CURSE OR A BLESSING TO CHRISTIANS?

(ANG TINIK SA LAMAN BA AY ISANG SUMPA O ISANG PAGPAPALA?)

2 CORINTHIANS 12:7-9 “And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

2Cor 12:8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

2Cor 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

Panimula:

6 KINDS OF THORN IN THE FLESH THAT CHRISTIANS EXPERIENCE: ARE THEY A CURSE FROM GOD OR A BLESSING?

1. THORN IN THE FLESH IS GIVEN TO CHRISTIANS TO MAKE US HUMBLE BEFORE GOD

2 CORINTHIANS 12:7-8 “And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

2Cor 12:8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

2. THORN IN THE FLESH IS GIVEN TO PROTECT US FROM SINNING

1 PETER 4:1-4 “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:”

ROMANS 8:5-8 “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.

Rom 8:6 For to be carnally minded [is] death; but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace.

Rom 8:7 Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

Rom 8:8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

1 PETER 4:1 “Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;”

1 PETER 4:2-4 “That he no longer should live the rest of [his] time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

1Pet 4:3 For the time past of [our] life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

1Pet 4:4 Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with [them] to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of [you]:”

3. THORN IN THE FLESH IS GIVEN BY GOD IN ORDER FOR THE CHRISTIANS TO PUT THEIR TRUST IN HIM.

( 2 CORINTHIANS 12:7-12 ) 7.“And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

11 I am become a fool in glorying; ye have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing am I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I be nothing.

12 Truly the signs of an apostle were wrought among you in all patience, in signs, and wonders, and mighty deeds.”

2 Corinthians1:9 “But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:”

2 CORINTHIANS 1:10 “Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver [us];”

4. THORN IN THE FLESH IS GIVEN TO CHRISTIANS SO THAT WE MAY EXPERIENCE THE SUFFICIENT GRACE OF GOD IN OUR LIFE

2 CORINTHIANS 12:9 “And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

1 PETER 5:10 “But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle [you].”

1 CORINTHIANS 15:10 “But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which [was bestowed] upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.”

5. THORN IN THE FLESH IS GIVEN TO CHRISTIANS SO THAT WE CAN GLORIFY GOD WHILE WE ARE FACING TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS

(1 Peter 4:13-16) “[13] But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.”

[14]If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

[15]But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

[16]Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

c. Amen and amen.

6. THORN IN THE FLESH IS GIVEN BY GOD TO CHRISTIANS SO THAT WE PUT OUR TRUST ON GOD TO COMFORT US IN TIMES OF TRIALS AND TROUBLES

( 2 Corinthians 1:4-10 ) [4]Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

[5]For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.

[6]And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.

[7]And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the consolation.

[8]For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

[9]But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:

[10]Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

Pangwakas:

2 CORINTHIANS 12:7-9 “And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

2Cor 12:8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

2Cor 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.”

God bless you all always!
