[II] [PREACHING LESSON 11:] THE CHRISTIAN'S SECRET PLACE OF PRAYER

THE CHRISTIAN'S SECRET PLACE OF PRAYER

(MATTHEW 6:6) “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.”

Introduction:

a. God, the author of prayer, established the right for His people to talk to Him secretly, privately, and sacredly.

b. God designed the prayer of a Christian to be a deeply personal and private time between Him and His dear children.

(PSALMS 91:1) “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

Important things to know about the secret place of prayer:

I. IT IS A SACRED PLACE FOR GOD’S DEAR CHILDREN

(HEBREWS 4:16) “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

a. The secret place where the Christian prays is the Throne of Grace. b. Every Christian who enters this secret place can expect to find God's grace and mercy, with the assurance of finding help from the Lord.

II. IT IS A SURE PLACE OF GOD’S PERFECT PROTECTION

(PSALMS 91:3-4) “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”

a. The secret place of the Most High assures us of God's perfect protection against the attacks of our spiritual enemies.

b. King David testified to how he found God's perfect protection when he came to God in the secret place.

(PSALMS 56:9) “When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me.”

III. IT IS THE SAFEST PLACE FOR OUR SPIRITUAL BATTLES

(PSALMS 91:1) “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”

a. God Himself gives the assurance of perfect protection when we come to Him in prayer.

b. God comforts His dear children, telling them not to fear, for He will rescue us from the terror by night.

(PSALMS 91:5) “Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;”

c. God will defeat our enemies, and you shall witness it with your own eyes.

(PSALMS 91:7-8) “A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.”

IV. IT IS A PLACE OF SATISFACTION IN GOD’S PROMISES

(PSALMS 91:15) “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.”

a. God was greatly blessed by King David’s expression of love toward Him.

b. God promised that He would answer whenever King David came to Him in prayer.

c. God promised to satisfy him and show him His salvation against his enemies.

(PSALMS 91:16) “With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.”

Conclusion

The secret place of the Most High is sacred. He promises that the Christian will find grace, mercy, and help in their time of need.

(HEBREWS 4:16) “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”

God bless you all always!
